Kappa
A moment to unwind in the city.
Close to Ogikubo Station, Kappa is a traditional tavern with a horseshoe counter serving charcoal-grilled skewers like liver, cheek, and udder ordered by the skewer, paired with wujiapi liqueur and beer.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Stepping past the noren curtain in Ogikubo as evening falls, you are greeted by a compact, horseshoe-shaped counter wrapped around the charcoal grill. At Kappa, the landlady works the grates with brisk, practised motions, anchoring an unpretentious watering hole where solo visitors and regulars drink and eat at their own pace.
The motsuyaki (grilled offal) listings on the wall feature classic cuts such as liver, heart, tongue, and cheek meat, alongside specialized cuts like stomach, fallopian tubes, udder, testicles, and hanging tender, all available to order from just 1 skewer. Part of the appeal lies in sampling contrasting textures straight off the fire, handed across the counter with your choice of savory tare sauce or salt. Skewered vegetables such as long green onions, green bell peppers, and shiitake mushrooms offer a welcome pause between meats.
To drink, the counter stocks bottled beer, shochu, and sake, as well as Denki Bran from Asakusa and wujiapi, a Chinese-style herbal liqueur whose herbal edge cuts cleanly through the richness of grilled offal. A modest selection of side dishes—including jellied beef broth (kappa nikogori), spiced heart, and stomach tossed in garlic soy sauce—stands ready for an easy first bite while waiting for skewers to cook.
Payment is cash only, and seating is arranged on simple round stools. It is the sort of effortless neighborhood tavern where dropping in alone after work for a few skewers and a quick drink feels completely natural.
